With meaningful Human Resource Analytics becoming more important for decisions impacting Organizational Strategy, the need for providing accurate, timely, insightful and easy to understand HR Metrics has never been more important. This 6 Modules weekend course focuses not only on developing effective HR metrics and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), but also introduces participants to Data Visualization software (in this case Microsoft Power BI) which allows end users to access large and complex sets of data that they can easily manipulate through Scorecards and Dashboards to produce their own analytics.

Most HR departments have hundreds( if not thousands) of spreadsheets of HR related data: headcounts, turnover, hiring, absenteeism, etc.  Often this data comes from many different sources and the methodology used to create this data is non standard and the format with how these analytics are presented could be in tables/graphs/charts with little or no standardization.  This course helps participants do two things:

  1. Develop effective HR Metrics and KPIs using generally accepted HR standards and definitions in order to make more effective decisions concerning strategy

  2. Introduce attendees to what is becoming the standard for data analysis: Data Visualization software.  This would include having students use a popular data visualization software (Microsoft Power BI) and using the tool to connect to, clean up and then visualize/analyze data.

Learning Objectives:

  • to help participants understand what are effective HR Metrics/Analytics
  • to show the best methods for developing HR Key Performance Indicators and targets
  • to introduce students to Data Visualization software and have them feel comfortable in the key aspects for using the tool.

Who should attend?

Any HR Professional responsible for creating HR Analytics or metrics reporting.

Class Capacity:

14 attendees

What is the course format?

This program combines live virtual instruction through Zoom with hands-on experiential learning through case studies, scenarios, group work/break out discussions and simulations.

Live Virtual Sessions: There will be online instructor-led modules, during which practical examples and experiences will be shared.

Materials: Participants will be provided with session workbooks and data files to follow along with the content covered in each module and to take notes, as well as additional pre-session and post-session assignments to prepare for the simulations.

Technical Requirements: Participants will need to have an up to date version of Microsoft Power BI Desktop version on their laptop/pc to connect to various files on a SharePoint site.  These files/connections will be used to build scorecards in Power BI. Participants will require the following software:

  • Microsoft EXCEL with Power Pivot and Power Query (Generally applies to Excel 2016, Excel 365 and beyond)

  • Microsoft Power BI Desktop (a recent version). This can be downloaded for free from the Microsoft Power BI Site here: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/

Peer Learning and Group Work: Participants will have the opportunity to learn from each other while answering questions and sharing experiences and observations during the modules, as well as through practical, hands-on exercises and simulations based on real-world HR Metrics methods.

Time Commitment: This program will be delivered in 6 modules. Participants will spend 2.5 hours each day participating in the virtual sessions and accompanying exercises and simulation activities.

The in-class virtual modules will be held as follows:
