More frequently than one expects, many of our colleagues may be using substances. Learn about the factors that may be contributing to this use, as well how to initiate discussion with employees and talk about the stigma and the programs and services available. A case study will assist in discussion.

Susan Kagan

Susan Kagan, RN, Mental Health Educator and Advocate is a registered nurse with 46 years of experience as an educator and practitioner, teaching most of her career in Seneca/York collaborative BScN nursing programs. She obtained her BN from the University of Western Ontario and a Master’s and Doctoral degrees in education from OISE. Now retired, Susan is focusing on mental health education and advocacy including work for the Mental Health Commission of Canada as a Mental Health First Aid Instructor.


Susan McGrail

Susan McGrail, Clinical Director, Addiction Services of York Region has a Masters in Social Work and over 20+ years of experience in addictions and Mental Health including roles as clinician, researcher, educator, quality improvement, trainer and administrator. Susan McGrail is currently the Clinical Director at Addiction Services for York Region. Susan is an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Social Work and is a surveyor for Accreditation Canada and has published in a number of peer-reviewed articles over the years.
