Imran Ahmad, Partner

Imran Ahmad is a Business Law partner and specializes in the areas of cybersecurity, technology and privacy law. He also maintains an active trade, customs and regulatory compliance practice.

As leader of the cybersecurity and data breach practice, Imran works closely with clients to develop and implement practical and informed strategies related to cyber threats and data breaches. He focuses on legal risk assessments, compliance, due diligence and risk allocation advice, security and data breach incident preparedness and response. He also provides representation in the event of an investigation, an enforcement action, or a litigation.

Imran is the author of Canada’s first legal incident preparation and response handbook titled A Handbook to Cyber Law in Canada (published in the fall of 2017 by LexisNexis).

Imran is a board member of the Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance’s (CATA) Cyber Council which advises the Government of Canada on cybersecurity matters. He is also the Vice-Chair of the Executive Committee of the Ontario Bar Association’s Privacy and Access to Information Law Section.

Imran has an active technology and privacy practice where he advises clients on licensing, outsourcing and service-provider arrangements, as well as on other commercial matters with respect to carrying on business over the Internet, cloud and in the digital environment.

As part of Imran’s trade, customs and regulatory compliance practice, he regularly advises both Canadian and foreign clients with respect to import/export compliance, customs audits, bilateral and regional free trade agreements, controlled goods and technology, economic sanctions and other cross-border issues.

Prior to his call to the Bar, Imran was a political advisor to Lieutenant-General the Honourable Roméo A. Dallaire (Ret’d), Senator, and clerked for the Honourable Edmond P. Blanchard, judge at the Federal Court of Canada and Competition Tribunal in Ottawa.

Imran is fluent in English, French and Urdu/Hindi.

Katherine Barbacki is an associate at Miller Thomson with a practice focused on cybersecurity and privacy law. She regularly assists clients with preventing and responding to data breaches, and advises on a number of privacy-related matters.
