Building a strong network is one of the most powerful tools for career success in HR. In this session, we’ll explore what networking really means, why it matters, and how to do it effectively—both in person and online. We’ll discuss common barriers (from shyness to cultural differences) and share practical tips to overcome them. You’ll also learn best practices for making authentic connections, offering value to others, and viewing networking as a long-term investment in your career growth.

Speaker bio(s)
Sara Allen, CHRP, Human Resources Consultant

Sara is a Certified Human Resources Professional who has been working in the field since 2017 as a Generalist and Manager. She has specialized experience working in unionized environments and has worked in mental health services, social housing, higher education, construction, and retail. Currently, she is employed as a Human Resources Consultant and Social Media Marketer with The Human Resources Business Group (HRBG), a London and area HR Consultancy. Sara also enjoys her role as Part-Time Faculty for HR students at Fanshawe College; additionally, she supports student learning by volunteering as a mock interviewer. Prior to working in Human Resources, Sara was a classically trained musician for over 10 years. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music performance from Western University and studied at the doctoral level for three years at West Virginia University. She has performed and taught music in Canada, the United States, and Europe. After making the decision to retrain in Human Resources, she received her Graduate Certificate in Human Resources Management from Fanshawe in 2017. She received her CHRP designation in 2018; currently, she is working towards her CHRL and Learning and Development Certificate at Western. Sara is a prolific networker, attending multiple events through the HRPA (where she volunteers as a Connector), her HR Consultancy, and the Southwestern Ontario Human Resources Business Group (SOHRG). She is an active member of several other professional groups and has attended both in-person and virtual networking events through The Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM), The People People Group, The Little Engines Small Business Support Community, The Business and Professional Women London Chapter (BPW), and The Trouble Club in London, England. This past summer, Sara took part in the 10k Friends Project, a social networking initiative by Rob Lawless, who aims to connect with 10,000 people through one-hour conversations.
