What once seemed like science fiction is quickly becoming reality. Artificial Intelligence ("AI") applications such as ChatGPT (which generates text in response to user prompts) and MidJourney (which generates images in response to user prompts) are rapidly growing in both the prevalence of their use and the sophistication of their output. As the use and adoption AI continues to grow, so does the imperative for workplaces and managers to become literate in the uses, advantages, and pitfalls of these technologies. This talk takes off from 2 thought-provoking premises: (i) the workplaces of 2019 are a relic of the past; and (ii) increased adoption of AI will demand that workplaces become more human, not less. Integrating psychological insights with legal principles, the talk will outline a modern blueprint for workplace culture that balances the need for performance with the fundamental need for connection in the workplace. The talk aims to provide participants with practical strategies to implement in their organizations when it comes to adopting and overseeing AI, and to spark a conversation on how AI can make the future of work more human-centric.

  1.  Attendees will gain a core understanding of modern generative AI, including how these technologies work, their limitations, and the opportunities and challenges they present for workplaces.
  2. Attendees will learn about the key laws, legal risks, mental health impacts, and ethical issues that define the big questions and challenges to be faced by organizations when it comes to the role and use of AI in the workplace.
  3. Attendees will learn critical tools for approaching the psychology of both intrapersonal and interpersonal workplace dynamics, with a focus on applying these tools to effectively facilitate healthy and high-performing workplace teams.

Maciej Lipinski, JD, PhD is a lawyer, mediator, and workplace coach. His current work includes workplace cultural assessment, mediation and dispute resolution, and employment legal counsel. He is the Principal and Founder of The Process Legal, author of published research on the psychology of online communications, and the co-author of the Ontario Employment Standards Act: Quick Reference and An Educator’s Guide to the Role of the Principal (3rd Edition).
