The role of Human Resources in the workplace has never been more important. HR Professionals and their organizations are navigating change, moving past a pandemic, and trying to bring some semblance of normalcy into everyday lives. Navigating uncertain times requires knowledge and understanding of current legal trends.

Join us March 26, 2024, for a Legal Open Mic Night at the Tir Nan Og. where Keagan Davis-Burns and Andrea Risk from Cunningham Swan will join us to answer questions surrounding current trends in employment law and best practices for managing legal issues and lawsuits.

Learning Objectives:

Gain better insight into the legal issues HR professionals in Ontario are currently facing , ensuring compliance, and mitigating potential risks

Understand common law and best practice as it pertains to employer-employee engagement

Strengthen your ongoing employment relationships with solid legal support

Increased access to knowledge by building a Community of Practice with peers across the Thousand Islands chapter in a number of Human Resources specialties

Speaker bio(s)
Keagan Davis-Burns

Keagan is an Associate Lawyer in Cunningham Swan's Labour and Employment Law group. Keagan obtained her undergraduate degree in Linguistics at the University of Western Ontario prior to attaining her Juris Doctor from the University of Ottawa. While at law school, Keagan worked at the University of Ottawa Community Legal Clinic representing members of low-income communities in tenancy disputes. Keagan practiced in both Ottawa and Toronto before returning to her hometown of Kingston, where she now practices exclusively in labour and employment law. She sits on the Board of Directors of Dress for Success - Kingston, which seeks to empower women to achieve economic independence by providing a support network, professional attire, and development programs to help women thrive in work and in life. She also sits on the Board of Directors of the Ontario Bar Association and is the social committee chair for the Frontenac Law Association.


Andrea Risk, Lawyer

Andrea is a partner in Cunningham Swan’s Labour & Employment Group. She graduated from Queen’s University in 1999 with numerous awards for outstanding achievement, including earning the highest standing in her graduating class. Prior to joining Cunningham Swan, she practised for several years with a major national law firm and gained significant trial experience. Andrea regularly assists employers by providing highly specialized and experienced assistance with legal aspects of all workplace issues. She has appeared before tribunals and all levels of court including the Supreme Court of Canada.
