Speaker bio(s)
Evan Campbell, Partner

Evan is a partner in the firm. Evan provides proactive advice to private and public sector employers on a variety of issues, including discipline and terminations, employment standards, human rights, employment contracts and workplace policies, workplace safety and insurance, and industrial and construction labour relations. Evan often acts as spokesperson during collective bargaining and regularly assists employers in responding to union organizing campaigns or certification applications. Evan has extensive experience litigating matters before the Courts and representing employers in arbitrations and before various federal and provincial employment and labour tribunals.


Catherine Phelps, Lawyer

Catherine is an associate at the firm. She provides advice and representation to employers with respect to a variety of labour and employment issues, including terminations, grievances, human rights, employment agreements, and workplace policies. Catherine appears on behalf of employers at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Ontario Labour Relations Board, and grievance arbitrations. Catherine is also regularly retained as a workplace investigator and routinely conducts investigations into complaints of workplace harassment and discrimination. Catherine serves on the HRPA Guelph & District Chapter Board as the Chapter Programs Chair.


Rusty McLay, Partner

Rusty is a partner in the Kitchener-Waterloo office of Filion Wakely Thorup Angeletti LLP practising in all areas of labour and employment law. Rusty represents clients at various tribunals and at all levels of court in all matters relating to labour and employment law, including labour arbitrations, human rights, wrongful dismissal actions and Ontario Labour Relations Board matters. Before joining the firm, Rusty was the Chief Administrative Officer and General Counsel at Conestoga College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning. For many years, he was a Vice-President, Legal at BlackBerry where he oversaw all global employment law issues.


Ashley Brown, Partner

As a partner in the firm, Ashley provides practical, proactive advice and representation to management in a variety of organizations – large and small, unionized and non-unionized, public and private sector. Ashley’s practice includes all facets of labour and employment law. It ranges from human rights, workplace investigations, occupational health and safety, employment contracts, employment standards, and employment issues in corporate restructuring, to responding to union organizing and applications for certification, collective bargaining, and grievance arbitration. Ashley is sought after as a speaker, author, instructor and seminar leader on labour and employment issues. Before joining Filion in 2018, Ashley practiced management-side labour and employment law at another Toronto boutique firm and at one of southeastern Ontario’s premier full-service law firms.
