This session provides HR professionals and managers with practical guidance on administering discipline in unionized workplaces while minimizing legal risk. Participants will learn the principles of progressive discipline, the importance of investigations and documentation, and how arbitrators assess disciplinary decisions. The presentation will also explore key aspects of labour relations and collective bargaining, including the grievance process, management rights, bargaining obligations, and common issues that arise during negotiations. Attendees will leave with practical strategies for navigating unionized workplaces confidently and effectively.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Participants will enhance their knowledge of progressive discipline in unionized workplaces by examining the legal principles governing workplace investigations, just cause, proportional discipline, documentation, and arbitration outcomes, enabling them to make legally defensible disciplinary decisions.
- Participants will strengthen their competency in labour relations by developing a practical understanding of collective bargaining, the duty to bargain in good faith, management rights, grievance administration, and the interpretation and application of collective agreements.
- Participants will improve their ability to identify workplace risks, apply legislative and collective agreement requirements to real workplace scenarios, and make informed decisions that promote effective labour-management relationships while supporting organizational compliance and strategic human resource management.
