Many employers are not aware that they may have a duty under human rights legislation to accommodate an employee that is faced with family-related challenges.
But a company that fails to accommodate in such circumstances – or worse, terminates an employee due to certain circumstances in their home life – could be on the hook to provide human rights damages for discriminating on the grounds of family status.
