A legislative update regarding employment, human resources, labour and safety laws. This event will provide HR Professionals with updated knowledge regarding legislative obligations with respect to various employee entitlements. Issues will include Bill 27, Bill 88, Incoming Changes to the Competition act, Employment Contracts, Issues Impacting Enforceability of Termination Clauses, Overtime Exemptions and Misclassifications, Independent Contractor Misclassifications, Practical Advice for Avoiding Common Mistakes At the Time of Termination and Following Termination, and Accommodation of Mental Health Disabilities.

Note: The Annual Business Meeting (ABM) portion of today’s event will include a report on Chapter activities, volunteer and newly designated member recognition, and an introduction of our 2023/2024 Chapter Board.

Speaker bio(s)
Maxwell Bauer

Maxwell Bauer was born and raised in Waterloo Region and obtained his undergraduate degree in Communications and Global Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University followed by his Juris Doctorate at Queen’s University in 2011. While at Queen’s Law, Max was the recipient of the Reuben Wells Leonard Prize in Dispute Resolution, the Jurisprudence Achievement Award and the M.A. Murray Award for his contributions to the athletic life at Queen’s Law School. Prior to bringing his talents back to Kitchener-Waterloo and to Morrison Reist Krauss, Max resided in Toronto where he articled at a prominent national Employment and Labour law firm. Thereafter, Max provided advice and counsel on employment law related matters while working at one of Canada’s major financial institutions. At Morrison Reist Krauss, Max advises on all aspects of the employment relationship, including advising and representing both employees and employers on human rights matters, health and safety issues, resolving workplace conflicts, advising on and negotiating severance packages and representing employers and employees in litigation. Max is approachable, ‘down-to-earth’ and works with empathy and compassion fully dedicating himself to helping individuals through difficult times. Max customizes his approach based on each client’s particular needs and preferences to obtain the best outcome possible.


Laura Buck

Laura Buck is a labour, employment and human rights lawyer in Hicks Morley’s Waterloo office. She advises employers in all aspects of the employment relationship including issues related to hiring, discipline, accommodation and termination. Laura has successfully defended employers in a wide range of claims including wrongful dismissal actions, human rights applications and contractual disputes. She has a diverse range of experience in civil and commercial litigation. She has appeared before the Superior Court of Justice, Divisional Court, Ontario Court of Justice, Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario and the Ontario Labour Relations Board.
