To help foster a safe, inclusive and productive workplace, it is essential to understand how our decisions are often impacted by unintentional racism. In this practical and timely presentation Sreya Roy provides an understanding of how unconscious bias, micro-aggressions, micro-invalidations, and subconscious stereotyping impact our decisions and actions at work. The session focuses on the employer’s obligations when managing a diverse workforce. It discusses recent court and tribunal decisions, policies, guidelines, and strategies to mitigate the impact of unintentional racism in the workplace.

Speaker bio(s)
Sreya Roy

Sreya joined Bernardi Human Resource Law in 2017 with several years of experience providing both labour and employment law services. Her current practice areas include, HR advisory, litigation, training, and investigations. Since 2018, Sreya has been on the Board of Directors for Indus Community Services, a non-profit dedicated to the provision of culturally appropriate services to newcomers, families, women and seniors in the community. She is a co-chair of Indus’ Governance Committee. Prior to her legal career, Sreya worked with various non-profit organizations and provided anti-violence, anti-oppression, and inclusivity training. She spent six years working as an individual and group counsellor with a sexual assault support centre where she helped provide support to survivors of sexual violence, while promoting anti-oppression through training and education. Sreya was elected treasurer of the Windsor Law chapter of Women’s Legal Action and Education Fund (LEAF) and redesigned the “No Means No” program aimed to educate young adults about consent and sexual assault. Sreya’s background in social-justice and anti-oppression has tremendously influenced her goal to help create safe, healthy, yet efficient workplaces. Sreya is fluent in Bengali and has a working knowledge of Hindi.
