Northwestern ON 11.01.19 FULL DAY WORKSHOP An Introduction to Indigenous Talent Recruitment & Retention

This one day training event will provide key tips and strategic approaches to enhance recruitment and retention activities to support inclusive workplaces for Indigenous talent. The session will infuse sound human resource practices & strategies with the applicability through the lens of Indigenous Inclusion. The session will be interactive, featuring sharing of information in a variety of mini-lecture components, videos, sharing of insights & real-life examples from the trainers, and throughout there will be group discussion segments.

By the completion of the day participants will be informed of the following learning points:

Module 1

  • Recall key points of Indigenous Peoples history in Canada
  • Connect concepts of Indigenous peoples experience in Canada with challenges of building trusting relationships for recruitment & retention

Module 2

  • Identify needs of Indigenous talent for improved recruitment & outreach
  • Recall tips and strategic advice on ways to build recruitment channels with Indigenous agencies and talent
  • Recall nuances of cross-cultural communication approaches to enhance recruitment conversations with Indigenous talent

Module 

  • Identify markers of an Indigenous Inclusive workplace
  • Recall reasons why an Indigenous person may leave the workplace
  • Recall key concepts that can support retention

Trina Maher

Trina is a seasoned adult educator and Indigenous inclusion workplace strategist with over seventeen years of experience providing customized solutions for her clients. Trina has provided her services to federal and provincial government departments, corporate Canada, post-secondary institutions, Indigenous community organizations, non-profit agencies, as well as industry organizations. Trina has advised on numerous Indigenous career development and labour market projects for many key industries in Canada to help develop opportunities for Indigenous youth to gain meaningful employment. Trina is Chair of the Canadian Aboriginal Human Resource Management Association, and a member of the National Native American Human Resource Association. She is a member of Mattagami First Nation, Ontario.

Diane Carrier

Diane is a member of Norway House First Nation in Manitoba and has a Bachelor of Arts Undergraduate Degree from the University of Winnipeg, a Certificate in Human Resources from the University of Manitoba and a Tribal Human Resource Professional (THRP) from the National Native American Human Resource Association (NNAHRA). Diane is Certified Professional Human Resources both in her region and in tribal areas in the United States of America. Diane's achievements have been recognized with the Bill Hanson Award for Aboriginal employment and the Certified Professional Human Resources Manitoba (CPHR Mb) Platinum Award for creating outstanding Aboriginal employment initiatives. Diane had a vision of creating a national Human Resource Association called the Canadian Aboriginal Human Resource Management Association (CAHRMA). This association is dedicated to the development of human resources for our aboriginal communities, including the development of an aboriginal HR certification program.
