Programs Dinner: Change is Difficult: Change Management should NOT be!

As the pace, scale and complexity of organizational change continues to escalate, people are feeling more and more overwhelmed and frustrated with change.   Being able to implement change in a way that is easier, faster and less stressful is a critical need in most organizations.  HR has a critical role to plan.  Do you have the knowledge and tools to manage resistance, identify the needs of the people being impacted and implement strategies to support them?  This interactive presentation will cast a new light on how to make change less difficult and disruptive.

HR departments across most organizations are adding change management as a core service and developing a company wide change strategy and methodology (CMO).  The focus of HR change efforts is quickly expanding from isolated projects to an enterprise-wide competency.  This is welcome as senior managers are becoming more and more concerned about the costs of poorly implemented changes.

Another major issue for HR is the effectiveness of how change is implemented.  Current research shows that between 60 and 70% of change efforts are only partially successful or do not last.   The major cause of these failures is the lack of a robust, people-centric change management methodology and toolkit that ensures that people are fully ready and able to implement and sustain changes.  In particular, leaders to be more involved and those impacted engaged earlier and each stage of the change process.

This presentation will discuss the following:
  • An overview of what change management and how it has evolved over the past 30 years
  • Organizational change management experiences, strengths and improvement opportunities.
  • An exercise to help understand how people react to and their needs during change
  • A model of innovation that shows the different levels, speeds and needs of change adoption
  • A structured change process focused on supporting people as they adapt and adjust to change
  • A review of change levers that are critical to the successful implementation of change
  • HR’s role is creating an organization-wide change capability and culture

Learning outcomes:
  • As a result of this presentation participants will:
  • Understand the core elements of change management
  • Appreciate people’s response and difficulties with change
  • Understand the needs of different people as they go through change
  • Be able to track individual change journeys and identify current needs
  • Be able to apply key change levers to current change initiatives
  • Take an overall change management framework back to their organizations.
