Far too often, organizations design and implement compensation and incentive plans without understanding what it is they need or the behaviours they might be unintentionally incenting. This presentation will provide participants with an overview of effective compensation and performance management planning, current and innovative trends in incentive design, and ways to positively motivate and drive expected behaviours and results within their organizations.

Learning Outcomes

Participants should expect an engaging session where they will:

• Receive an overview of the most recent research into the psychology of incentives and what really motivates executives and employees to perform;

• Hear how executives and employees perceive their incentives and what can be done to get them fully engaged in a performance management process;

About the Speaker: Brad Kelly

Brad Kelly is a Partner at Global Governance Advisors. With extensive experience in strategic planning in large complex organizations, Brad works with Board members and managers of public and private organizations to devise innovative governance and compensation solutions to existing or anticipated challenges.

Areas of Expertise

Brad specializes in performance goal setting, strategic review, valuation and the innovative design of executive compensation and corporate governance programs that help focus and support organizational strategic objectives and stakeholders' interests as well as mitigate risks. As well, Brad is certified in the assessment of leadership behaviours and skills, as well as the assessment of organizational governance effectiveness. Brad is a recognized expert in performance management and speaks regularly on the Psychology of Incentives and Effective Performance Management Strategies at Human Resources Professional Association and World at Work events. Brad has worked on compensation and incentive plan reviews for many privately owned, private equity and real estate firms and acts as an advisor to STS Capital Partners, a global investment bank focused on private businesses mergers and acquisitions.

Professional Background and Affiliations

Having spent a number of years as a Senior Consultant in Hay Group's Executive Compensation Practice, Brad had the opportunity to represent stakeholder interests and advise the Boards of a wide range of organizations – from public to private and from large, established, financial institutions to new corporate or industrial start-ups. Prior to this, Brad spent close to a decade working in the Federal Public Service where he developed a strong knowledge of complex institutions and their needs. Working at the Treasury Board Secretariat of Canada as a program analyst, Brad specialized in performance management and strategic planning – guiding federal executives and organizations through annual performance planning cycles. Following that, Brad became a senior policy analyst and strategic planner at Industry Canada where he focused on organizational renewal, succession planning and management retention. In addition, while at Industry Canada, Brad led the development of broad, national, strategic plans and innovative enterprise-wide policies. Currently Brad is a principal course developer and lecturer for the NCPERS Accredited Fiduciary, and the HRPA Accredited Executive Compensation Programs; is frequently asked to present at conferences and to professional associations; conduct media interviews; and regularly publishes articles in professional journals and magazines. Brad is also a former Directors College faculty member; the current Board Vice Chair of Altruvest Charitable Services; Board Chair for Sesqui Inc.; and a faculty member of the Not-for-Profit Governance Institute.

Education

Brad is a Masters of Public Administration graduate of Carleton's School of Public Policy and Administration. He graduated as Valedictorian at the University of Waterloo and holds Honours degrees and specializations in Political Science, Public Administration, Legal Studies, and Philosophy. Brad studied at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and received numerous awards for his work.
